Sunbury Felt Roof Strip-Up, Warm Roof Build-Up and Lantern Upgrade
This Sunbury project involved removing an ageing felt flat roof that had been installed without a vapour control layer. The existing roof lantern was also removed so the opening could be upgraded for a larger rectangular lantern and the full roof could be rebuilt properly from the deck upwards.
Surrey Roofing & Windows Ltd completed the roof replacement, roof lantern installation, external roofline work and the internal making-good, including plasterboarding, plastering and decorating. The result was a warmer, brighter room below and a more robust flat roof system above.

Flat roof replacement and roof lantern installation
Res-Tec 2020 waterproofing over a warm roof build-up
The Problem
The existing felt flat roof did not have a vapour control layer, which is a common problem on older flat roofs and can lead to condensation risk within the roof build-up. The customer also wanted to improve natural light by replacing the existing lantern with a larger rectangular unit.
Because the project involved both the roof covering and the lantern opening, it needed to be treated as a full rebuild rather than a surface-level repair. That allowed us to correct the build-up, upgrade insulation and form a clean, stable base for the new waterproofing system.
Our Solution
- Stripped up the existing felt flat roof and removed the old roof lantern.
- Installed an Alutrix vapour control layer to improve the roof build-up.
- Added Celotex insulation boards for a warm roof specification.
- Fitted new 18mm tongue and groove boards to create a strong deck.
- Installed a Res-Tec 2020 liquid-applied waterproofing system.
- Supplied and fitted a larger Duplus roof lantern measuring 3m x 1.5m.
- Installed new UPVC fascia, soffit and guttering around the roofline.
- Completed plasterboarding, plastering, decorating and internal finishing.

Warm Roof Build-Up
Alutrix VCL, insulation and new boarding were used to rebuild the roof properly before waterproofing.

New Deck and Lantern Upstand
The roof deck and lantern opening were prepared for a larger rectangular lantern and Res-Tec finish.

Completed Exterior
The finished roof includes Res-Tec waterproofing, UPVC roofline details and the new Duplus roof lantern.
Finished Result
The completed roof now has a correctly layered warm roof build-up, a clean grey Res-Tec finish, new roofline details and a larger lantern that brings more natural light into the room below. Internally, the plasterboarding, plastering and decorating were completed so the project was handed back as a finished space, not just an external roofing job.
