From closed-cell foam removal to a complete tiled roof
This project combined two related jobs: removing closed-cell spray foam from the roof area and replacing the existing covering with a conventional, maintainable tiled roof system.
Closed-cell foam is rigid and can bond firmly to roof materials. On this property, the agreed approach was a complete strip and re-roof rather than trying to rebuild around the foam-covered roof build-up.

The Project Brief
The aim was to remove the closed-cell spray foam, expose the roof for inspection and replace the ageing covering with a properly detailed pitched roof system.
The new specification followed our usual re-roof build-up: breathable membrane, treated battens, Redland 49 concrete interlocking tiles, mechanically fixed ridge and verge details, and ventilation at the eaves.
Work Completed
- Stripped the existing roof covering, battens and underlay as part of the foam-removal work.
- Removed the closed-cell spray foam from the roof area and inspected the exposed roof build-up.
- Installed new breathable roofing membrane and treated battens at the correct gauge.
- Laid Redland 49 concrete interlocking tiles across the pitched roof.
- Installed a mechanically fixed dry ridge system.
- Completed the roof edges with dry-verge detailing.
- Added ventilation at the eaves to support airflow through the roof space.
- Detailed the chimney junctions to suit the new tile covering.

This project shows one possible outcome after closed-cell foam removal. It does not mean every foam-covered roof needs replacing: the sensible scope depends on the foam, the existing roof and what can be retained safely after removal.
